Do you agree with John Stuart Mill that some activities are of such high qualitative character that they are essential to a happy human life? If so, what determines the qualitative character? examples. If no why?

I agree with Stuart Mill. There are qualitative differences in terms of pleasure. For example, heroin is a "simple pleasure" but it does not nessecarily amount to a happy life. Happiness provided by things such as human interaction cannot be replaced by lesser pleasures.

I agree with Anya(and Stuart Mill) in that certain pleasures are more qualitative than others, and despite the amount or frequency of your "simple pleasures," you cannot be truly happy without your quantitative pleasures, ex) spending time with friends

No everyone derives happiness from different things so there can be no set group of things that determine happiness. Also doing one thing that makes you a little happy many times instead of doing something that makes you really happy one time doesn't always replace the other. Most activities abide by the law of diminishing returns and offer less happiness then they initially did.

I do agree with John Stuart Mill that some activities are of such high qualitative character that they are essential to a happy human life. Some of the things to define the qualitative character would be feelings of adrenaline, invigoration, fear, uncertainty, companionship, love, and other things based off of the human emotions.

I agree with Mill. We are substituting some pleasures with others all the time. Sometimes, I believe we do it unconsciously, because we are just able to switch from reading a book, to watching t.v. We might do this because we are not getting enough pleasure when doing one activity, so we switch to do another one, to obtain the pleasure we need and want.

Simple pleasures, like drugs or other selfish things, bring very high pleasure but only for a short period. However, strong relationships and self-transcendence bring long-term pleasure.
